Peraica to run for state's attorney
By Mickey Ciokajlo | Tribune staff reporter August 14, 2007
Stamping out public corruption will be a top priority, Republican Tony Peraica said Tuesday as he announced his bid for Cook County state's attorney. Peraica, 50, of Riverside hopes to succeed Democrat Richard Devine, who announced last week that he will step aside at the end of his third term in December 2008.
No other Republican has announced an interest in seeking the GOP nomination for the office in the Feb. 5 primary. A crowd of Democrats are lining up to win their party's nod.
Peraica ran last year for Cook County Board president but lost to Todd Stroger. However, Republicans have fared better in races for state's attorney than any other countywide office in heavily Democratic Cook County, winning four of the past 10 elections.
"We will audit the books, lock up the crooks and restore accountability to the office," Peraica said. "As state's attorney, I will fight corruption and fraud in county government."
An attorney for more than two decades, Peraica runs a small law practice, Anthony J. Peraica & Associates, from a storefront on Archer Avenue on Chicago's Southwest Side.
