An intresting bit of news from the Broken City a few weeks ago.
A reporter at our Newspaper, a Man who covers the LSU Beat section, was recently arrested for Soliciting Sex with a Minor over the Internet and commiting a Sex crime.
This is a fairly new law that states if you ask/agree to have sex with a minor over the internet or phone, then you are subject to arrest.
Makes sense really, but it does raise intresting questions. Like...
The "Underage Girl" he Solicited Sex with was, in fact, a 45-Year-Old Kenner Policeman. The Kenner Policeman contacted this man and said "Hey Baby, wanna have some fun?"
This is intresting because the man, in fact, did not solicit sex from a minor at all. He wasnt going over to meet a minor at a hotel, he was going to meet a 45 year old Detective. Many would argue that he committed no crime. However, I think the law states that if you belive shes a minor its still illeagal (except worded better). So up to this point, im pretty cool with his whole ordeal and I do belive he is guilty of Soliciting Sex with a minor.
However.
Is he a sex offender? Should a sex offender mark be put against him and should he be thrown in Jail, never to be able to get work at a respectable establishment again, have to send letters out to all nieghboors warning that he is a "sex offender"? He did NOT, in fact, commit a Sex Crime. This is very Minority Reportish, arresting someone Before they commit a crime. If anyone has seen American Beauty, then they know the scene with Kevin Spacey, who pretty much says "What the freak, I cant have sex with a [15? 16?] year old girl" and calls it quits. He commited no crime because he didnt have sex with a minor and commited no sex crime. This reporter is getting charged with a crime he didnt commit, he did not commit a sex crime. For all we know, he could have just said "No way" and turned around, got back in his car, and drove away, having commited no Sex Offence.
Are we now arresting people for thinking things, for "maybe might have" done something? It just seems wrong to charge someone with a Sex offence when, in fact, no sex offence has been commited.
What the Hell is wrong with this country!
