Why do tolls roads exist? Does this government not extort enough money via "Taxes" and "Fees" from us already? By the way - how are the toll roads out where you live? I was on interstate 80 near Cleveland and that road stinks in places - pot hole alley! Where did my "Toll" go on that road? Isn't the buck twenty-five for EACH car that gets on it enough to put down some patch at least? How about the 40 some odd cents per gallon I pay for gasoline tax in Ohio - doesn't THAT cover any wear on the road that my vehicle causes? Where does the bleeding stop?

This column should have been titled "Troll Roads."

The Troll roads in Illinois are constantly being repaired. But they are lumpy, bumpy, and full of flying debris. Look out for the truck parts. Pot holes? We have dumpster holes here. I have seen the pavement explode from the heat and tear off a truck axle. Dual drive wheels go tearing through the air. Spin outs from impossibly tight turns with a pile of cop cars. NOT a single flashing light to warn you of the OIL all over the pavement in tight turn. Full four wheel drift through this turn and stop by the side of the road a half mile down from the mess. Shake and scream at the cops to turn on their lights. Yes fun times for all.
So our roads here are excellent, if you like to run suicide alley in real life.

ive heard that some tolls are used to pay for special projects, but i do agree with you chu i think its rediculous at the whole concept of toll roads if the roads are still crap

the purpose of the toll road, or at least as my dad told me, was because that road isn't getting funding from taxes, so they need some other way to pay for repairs on the road

To pay for repair of roads. I dobut the bridges make money. Every 5 years the spend a million or so, plus road matience employess, told booth operator pensions/salaries. And the 100 thousand dollar "Politcian Pocket" deductable.
But tolls suck. >.<
