My phone line has become intermittent. Sometimes it works and sometimes all I get is an AC hum. The sixty/120 hertz type of hum. Not the hum from you people when I get killed in ther server.
When the repair people get called they see a problem on the line. the calls get forwarded to Auntie Jill. The phone starts working. We dial #73 and the phone stops working again.
Does any one have a relative that works for the phone company? An inside track is the only way to figure out this problem.

No, and it's 73# to remove call forwarding.

All control functions start with either the * or the # key. The software has been set that way since the stone ages. When I dialed 73# the phone said that there is no such area code. Dialing #73 caused the system to reset and the phone died.

the solutions as offered in Sandman are of no use. Both of the solutions would interfere with the operation of the DSL signal.
The next thing is that the AC line noise is not from an induced source That is determined by the fact that the noise appears and disappears from a change at the Central office, hereafter called the co. When there is a co test initiated the noise goes away.
Secondly the problem has changed. Now the problem is there is no noise on the line and I get a dial tone but NO one can initiate an inbound call.
Back in the bad old days there were people in the co that you could ask to run a check. They could go to the equipment and see for themselves the problem(s). Now tests are done by and reported by the same computer. The line has to be good because the computer says it is good. The stupidity is that the computer is not a person who would have to call me back. When the person cannot get back to me then they would say "Aha" and know that something was missed.
