Looks like I might have to hang up the shotgun for a week or so. Seems my power supply has given up the ghost. I've been smelling it burning for a few weeks now, with my case temp rising as high as 70 degrees. Naturally, I did what any sensible person would do.
I ignored it until it went away.
It didn't go away though. With a lot of smoke and the smell of barbecued cat, my power supply died. Thankfully my motherboard *seems* to be okay, but being a poor student struggling with epic tuition rates, even a $40 PSU is going to have to be a budgeted expense.
If it is just my power supply, you should see me back in a week or so. If its my motherboard, it might be a few months.
My mic also seems to be on the fritz. I'm hoping it was just a symptom of the soundcard overheating, but I'm afraid you might have to go even longer without hearing the melodic sounds of my voice. Thats right! No more Henry the 8th.
Cheers, -Jayne

Yeah. Watch him. There is a reason they call him caboose. He likes to follow behind and use everyone else as cannon fodder so he can tell where the bad guys are. I'm marginally certain he won't shoot you in the arse if you get in front of him. But no guarantee. Cheers, -Jayne

Heh. A friend of mine just gave me an old 300W PSU. It rattles a lot, but seems to work okay. Guess my motherboard isn't damaged afterall. Hopefully it stays that way.

Rattling PSU = kinda unsafe. I'd say use it until a new one gets in. That is, if you're getting a new one. Here's my suggestion. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817163017480Watt PSU. $32 after shipping. Has some good reviews too. Look around Newegg. They've got some amazing deals. The reason I say this is because a rattling 300W PSU probably won't last you forever. Or 2 weeks. We needs ya Jayne!

What do you do when your computer is making a strange noise?
Ignore it until it becomes a familiar noise!

Hmm.... good point. When I first assembled this beast, I had so many fans in it that it sounded like a jet taking off. Now, I can safely go to an airport and stand on the runway without any loss of hearing!

Had it running CSS for a while. I was worried 300W wouldn't be enough to run my system, but it seems to do okay. It runs a lot cooler now. I guess the fan (loud as it is) move more air than the old one. Hopefully it will last for a while.

What are your system stats? 300w is kinda low... Old. Very Old AMD AthXP 1800+ 1GB DDR RAM Gforce 6600GT 128mb (AGP) SBLive Not the oldest system in the clan (I think raccoon has that title), but still nothing that would use 300W fully. Cheers, -Jayne
