There must be a contagion out there that causes perfectly good machines to up and smoke themselves. My desktop died. Upon power up there is not even a single beep. I guess the mobo is gone. Switch out for a known good power supply gets the same results.
The compact flash that was plugged in is still good. So is the usb mouse. So the death and destruction appear to be limited to the mobo. MY old desktop is not capable of doing CSS as it is only 1.5 Ghz. So until I get some new machine I will not be playing.
I wouold like to hear about any other experiences of dead machines .

My machines have always been pretty good. I gave my 10-year old gateway computer to my mom for her job, and it works just fine. I would recommend getting a laptop cause they kick ass.

the last computer to kick the can on me was an amd duron 600mhz with a geforce 2 32mb card. (top of the line baby) anyway now, for some reason the mobo wont recognize any pci cards, and it doesnt have anything on-board. granted i bought it from a friend for $25 to replace my amd k62 233mhz IBM so it did its job, for what it was worth.

There has been a recent issue with Dells (if yours is a Dell) where the capacitors on the motherboard would pretty much kill themselves then cause the motherboard to overheat and die. If you have a newer Dell (I hope not) then that is probably the problem and you should contact Dell if you have a warranty. On another note, that same problem happened to my motherboard and to fix it I had to unplug the power supply for about 3 hours then try to start the computer again and it has worked ever since. That and my computer will start randomly shutting itself down - that is my cue to get some compressed air and start cleaning the dust out. Then it starts working normally for about 2 months then repeat. Maybe that'll work for you. Sorry if this does absolutely no good for you.

An update:
My internal D drive survived the melt down. At least my non sensitive data is OK. Now to buy two more usb cases for the other drives and see what remains there. Triage continues.

Now all I have to do is find my password file! Now all I have to do is:
Install a video card (have to use old card so I will be even easier to kill), reinstall HL2, DL the update and I will be ready to die again and again and again. By the time I get all of this done the server will have the stats reset again - if they aren't already reset. Re enable the developer console, rebind the admin. Yah that is about it. I want an M1A2 tank of a computer that it takes a direct hit from a bomb to destroy. Like that will ever happen.
