My Nvida driver quit. OK report the error to the evil empire. Unknown error. OK. Suggest you download the newest driver from this link. OK. Download the driver. Look at hints - uninstall old driver. I uninstalled the old driver. Restart. Install new driver. Restart.
Run steam - your driver is out of date. Whaaa?
Come on guys you got to be kidding me! Make up your mind. Who has the latest driver link, Microsoft or Steam?

if you are using it for steam purposes- go with steam
dont EVER pay attention to those little pop-ups in the corner that say "X is out of date" or "an update is available for Y"
they only try to sell things to you. or if not, they waste your time. if it ain't broke dont fix it.

I'd say that if it's an Nvidia driver then you should go to www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html (that's the newest driver for any GeForce except the 7800) and download the driver there. You have to go through an install thingy, and make sure you install the driver to your C: Drive. That should help. And btw, Windows doesn't hate you. It treats everyone like that.

Ah yes I did get the driver that you recommended Caboose. That is the one that Steam wanted me to get. Getting the driver cleared up a couple of problems I was having.
As for Windblows yes it does hate everyone and since I am one of the everyone Windblows hates me. The same can be said of Steam.
Back to killing and less gabbing.
Bait (MY FPS went up over 70+ onthe video stess test with the driver reinstalled and I am running a 1280 by window!)
