The outlet shown was blown apart by a failed sand bar surge suppressor. Or at least that is what the power company told us.

There is a reason why you should never paint over an outlet. Note the paper on the back of the outlet. If the front side of the outlet had been painted the fire may have spread to the wall plate and the adjoining wall. Note that the neural wire is the one with the damage. If my neutral wire had not been bonded to the ground the whole house would have gone up in flames. Surprisingly the damage was restricted to this one outlet and nothing else in the house was damaged. Total cost to repair $0.64!
