Backup dirves are wonderfull and I wonder how many of you have one. Everyone should buy a discounted hard drive and a USB case and build one if they have not already done so.

thats poll is bias, I know what a backup drive is, but why do I need one? Windows has this amazing thing called "Boot up in last known good configuration" which will completely bypass most viruses, plus you can always piggy back the harddrive to another computer to save it. I am ok for anything but a magnetic attack or a meltdown. Here is a tip: Never put stuff that you cant lose on your harddrive, I have a harddrive in my saftey depoits box for those things.

i have 2 250gb drives for data in my new compy, i had 4 physical drives in my old compy with one partitioned so windows had its own little space to install on. ive had way too many instances where windows crashes and i have to reformat, losing all my other data. not to mention im crazy paranoid about losing shit so ya, everything is backed up

Flash drive? Flash it is gone. Not a safe backup. I have had two flash drives die of old age or some other malady. Yes keep all your backups there.

My primary system, I backup the entire C drive to an external drive on Sundays. I have 3 SATA drives in the system however 300, 200, 200GB.

I really should backup my C: and F: drives since I have crap scattered everywhere on them. And people, do not be retarded and try to email yourself a backup of each file.... I swear I didn't mean to crash the damn Yahoo server...I blame them for not having fast enough internet. Sooo....yeah. I should get an external hard drive or something. Or a ton of blank DVDs.

like clock said, i dont really have nething on my computer that i cannot lose. most of my computer consists of music, game saves (which i wouldn't shed a tear over if i lost them), and the GAME's themselves.
pretty much all can be easily replaced.

B8, im very sorry, but flash drives can't "burn out" or die... they will save your data forever unless you, i dunno... leave them in the sun... under a magnifying glass... then put them in water to cool them off... but hey, who can say what kind of flash drives you have attempted to use?

OH my poor misguided person. Ramp all flash memory is of limited life. You do not understand the technology. After a number of cycles they stop writing. They are also subject to electrostatic discharge failure. Shock failure is another mechanisim. All plastic cased integrated circuit technology has a moisture intrusion limitation. Yes even high humindy can and will cause them to fail. From your post it is apparent that you have no electronics background. Go learn before you try to explain things that you know nothing about.

A number of cycles? I'm using it to back up my files... ONCE... not to transport data whenever I feel like. And my computer will be out of date sooner than my flash drive will be. Also you are supposed to keep them in their little container. But i don't trust that even though my flash drive is good quality, so I just ziplocked it. It's like... bread. Keep it in a cool, dry place, and it will last until you are done eating it. even if that takes a month or two.

FLASH DRIVE BATTERIES DIE: if a flash drive is not plugged into a computer the data will be lost after a while (no i do not know the time frame).
and i have had 3 flash drives just up and die for no good reason. luckly i didn't have anything on them. My best one lasted me abotu a year and ended up without a case (it was jus the chip) for abotu 3 months.
Hard Drives will last with reliability for about 3 years. But hold the most and much better data access times.
DVD's if Burned right and kept right will last "forever" so if you never use it and keep in climate controled place in the dark with no electrical or magnetic feilds you will never lose data.
Best data storage. Paper that has been laminated, put in plastic bags, and in a fireproof safe. Just don't try and store 5 gb of data on it it will cost too much.

im with kami "no way, i say if one thing goes down, it all falls down.
DOWN WITH THE SHIP RANDOM ASSORTMENT FILES!!!!" who needs to back up
Besides, if your HD fails or data is corrupted or whatever, it's because god wanted it to happen, so there is a reason why it was deleted
